RCB Honors Dr. Mike Saag

Rotarian Dr. Mike Saag, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Global Health at UAB, presented a monthly COVID-19 update during the May 26th Rotary Club of Birmingham meeting. He shared the science behind the revised CDC guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals and encouraged everyone to get vaccinated.

“The vaccine really works,” Dr. Saag said, “If we’re all vaccinated, there’s virtually no risk that we’ll be transmitting this virus to one another. That’s the miracle of these vaccines—and I use the word miracle very deliberately. It’s a miracle in our lifetime . . . a true miracle. The likelihood that a vaccine would be designed and shown to work in a matter of ten months is nothing short of miraculous.”

President Jon Blankenship thanked Dr. Saag for his service to the Club and the community over the past year and announced a contribution to the Rotary International Foundation in Dr. Saag’s honor, bestowing the designation of Paul Harris Fellow (level 2) and presenting him with a recognition pin with a sapphire stone. The honor is reserved for people whose lives demonstrate a shared purpose with the objectives of The Rotary Foundation.
