RCB Sensory Room Dedicated at Legacy Arena
On Thursday, January 13th, RCB President Brenda Hackney and RCB Foundation Board of Directors Chair Lee Weathers gathered with local government and business leaders, donors and nonprofit changemakers, including Rotarians Josh Jones and Bill Smith, at the newly renovated Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex for the ribbon cutting dedication of the Rotary Club of Birmingham Sensory Room.
The facility was made possible by a RCB Foundation grant to local nonprofit KultureCity, which works to make public places more accessible for people struggling with sensory processing challenges due to autism, PTSD, dementia, stroke and other disorders. Thanks to KultureCity, over 60 locations in the Birmingham area and over 500 international locations are now sensory inclusive. Two additional rooms were dedicated at the complex thanks to contributions made by Pam and Bill Smith and Diane and Greg Knight.
“The Rotary Club of Birmingham is pleased to partner with KultureCity to create a new sensory inclusive spot at the recently renovated Legacy Arena at the BJCC,” said Hackney. “This room will provide a welcoming space for individuals with sensory challenges to enable them to safely and fully experience events at this tremendous venue in our city. Just as our leaders recognized the value in taking the established facility that was here and building upon its foundation to make it a better place, the Rotary Club of Birmingham is proud to support KultureCity’s work to take what’s in place for the general population and build upon it to make everyday experiences better for those with sensory challenges. Together, we can take the world and keep finding ways to build it up to make it a better place.”
