Interstate 22 Named in Honor of Rotarian Spencer Bachus

During the September 27th Rotary Club of Birmingham meeting, Rotarian Mike Thompson, Coalition for Regional Transportation Chairman, announced the naming of the "Spencer Bachus Highway" on Interstate 22 in honor of Rotarian Spencer Bachus.

Area leaders, including Alabama Department of Transportation Director John Cooper and Birmingham Business Alliance CEO Steve Ammons, were on hand for the announcement and unveiling of the unveiling of the highway sign that will be located on Interstate 22.

“Most of what we do, we do for future generations,” Bachus said in remarks during the presentation. “And I really didn’t expect to see it open in my lifetime quite frankly. Of course the northern beltline is still not completed but that’s not the test of whether something is worthwhile. I owe it all to the people that elected me to go to Washington.”

Bachus served as the U.S. Representative for Alabama’s Sixth District from 1993 until his retirement in 2015. During his tenure, Bachus worked as a member of the House Transportation Committee to champion the construction of Interstate 22 connecting Birmingham and Memphis.
