Preschool Learning INitiative
Preschool learning is essential to improve educational opportunities for Birmingham’s youngest students. In 2004, the Rotary Club of Birmingham established the Preschool Learning Initiative (PLI) as a joint program with United Way’s SuccessBySix. PLI was designed as a reading readiness instructional program with the goal of preparing 4-year-olds to learn to read prior to matriculation into the Birmingham City Schools (BCS) K-12 public school system. Studies have shown that the long-term effects of PreK are beneficial, as demonstrated by increased high school graduation and college enrollment rates. The program is structured around the understanding that four-year-old students are at an important junction in their learning, and they love to learn through “play.” At that age, half of a child’s intelligence is gained through interaction with others. PLI helps these children experience:
Classrooms filled with colorful, interactive learning toys
Well-trained teachers excited about early childhood education
Increased parental involvement in their children’s education
Education matters to Rotarians because it helps our community:
Develop a more skilled workforce
Improve economic development
Lower crime
Improve health
Since 2012, RCB, SuccessBySix and BCS have worked together to expand the program into classrooms throughout the school system, with BCS providing classrooms and funding for a teacher and assistant in each class. PLI has furnished 17 classrooms, trained teachers, coached parents, helped establish a Resource Center open to all PreK teachers and parents, funded numerous age-appropriate playgrounds, provided thousands of children’s books, and contributed toward multiple programs that encourage early childhood education for Birmingham children. RCB also provides volunteers to serve in the classrooms, representatives to participate in various events, and feedback regarding site selection and the partnership overall.
RCB has invested over $1 million to date in the Preschool Learning Initiative. We are proud of the progress made in Birmingham’s early childhood education over the years. A good education is key to a child being able to live to their full potential. And the whole community benefits when that happens.
